In The Monopoly Club, I explore the tension between individual identity and systemic repetition. By taking the familiar, jovial silhouette of “Mr Monopoly” and transforming him into a high-contrast, tessellated pattern, the work strips away the character’s singular persona to reveal a frantic, mechanical collective.

The use of bold black and vibrant red ink creates a sense of urgent energy, while the minute details—the cool blue of the eyes and the green ribbons on the top hats—provide anchor points for the viewer’s gaze amidst the visual noise. The figures are locked in a synchronised dance across the A3 surface, suggesting a world where the boundaries between the player and the game have blurred. This piece serves as a rhythmic commentary on the nature of accumulation, conformity, and the relentless momentum of the systems we build.

Specialising in abstract-figurative acrylics, Yiwei Shi explores the human form through a lens of joyful distortion. Based in Sydney, Shi is known for his ability to distil complex movement into decisive, two-dimensional visions.

His portfolio oscillates between two compelling modes: a serene minimalism characterised by flat colour and simple backgrounds, and a detailed, pattern-rich aesthetic often seen in his dynamic sports illustrations. By omitting intricate details in one piece and celebrating them in the next, Shi highlights the diverse textures of human life. His work is unified by his celebration of the "extraordinary posture," reshaped to amplify drama and spark a connection with the viewer. Each canvas is a testament to his belief that beauty and humour are found in every gesture.
